Safe Driving on the Winter Roads

Driving Safely

Safely driving on winter roads is important as you travel. If the roads are less than ideal, make sure that you slow down your speed. This will help you to allow enough time if the vehicle in front of slams on the brakes. By driving at a speed you feel comfortable at, you will have better control of the vehicle and stay safe. Ideally you should leave three car lengths or three seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you. With poor roads and weather, this should be doubled or tripled even. By leaving extra space, you decrease the chance of an accident occurring. With safe driving tips for winter, you can be prepared for any road conditions.

Proper Maintenance of the vehicle

You will also want to make sure that your vehicle is properly maintained. As it is brought in for regular scheduled maintenance, then we can check for any issues or problems that it may start to have. In winter, it will get dark earlier, so you will need to turn on the lights more. You will want to make sure the headlights, taillights, and blinkers all work for your vehicle. Not only will it help your visibility, but also help others see you. You should take the time and check the lights when you are home and before traveling. If a bulb has gone out, you will want it replaced immediately. You can also bring the vehicle in and we can inspect the lights and blinkers for you.

Know the Weather when traveling

Another way to stay safe while driving is to know what type of weather conditions you will be driving into. Make sure to check the weather along your roads travel plans, as well as where your destination is. This will help you be aware of what type of weather you might be driving into. If there is snow or ice predicted, make sure to leave earlier to give yourself enough time to safely get there.
